66 Watts Stronger: How Matt Turned Cancer into a Comeback Story
From cancer survivor to cycling sensation, Matt gained 66 watts FTP, conquered RideLondon and Mallorca 225, and discovered the power of community and smart coaching with Njinga.
- +66 watts (174 → 240W)
- + 46% from 2.46 to 3.59w/kg
- First 100 miles in a time of 7h47m
- Accelerate

The Challenge
Matt came to Njinga after struggling in triathlons. Despite strong swims and runs, the cycling leg was always where he lost time. Determined to improve, he signed up for RideLondon — but lacked the skills, structure, and cycling knowledge to train effectively.
"I knew I lacked the experience other cyclists had. I needed guidance and a proper plan."
Just as his journey was beginning, life threw him a curveball. Matt was diagnosed with prostate cancer - a shock to someone who felt fit and healthy.

The Njinga Difference
Training with Njinga proved to be a turning point. Under the guidance of Head Coach Togo, Matt’s training shifted to structured, power-based sessions, grounded in FTP testing and tailored training zones. But Njinga offered more than just smart cycling training. It gave Matt:
- A supportive community that kept him motivated through treatment.
- Holistic coaching including fuelling, recovery, and mindset.
- Group accountability via RideLondon training blocks and the Njinga Collective club.
"Njinga became my pillar of strength during treatment. The camaraderie and encouragement were invaluable."
The Results
Matt’s progress on and off the bike was remarkable:
- FTP gain: +66 watts (174 → 240W) in 18 months.
- Power-to-weight ratio: Improved from 2.46 → 3.59 w/kg (+46%).
- RideLondon 100: Completed in 7h47, raising over £1,200 for Prostate Cancer UK.
- Mallorca 225: Conquered the challenge in tough heat, with no cramps thanks to fuelling strategies.
- Became a valued member of Njinga Collective, growing his confidence and cycling knowledge.
- Is now the chief Njinga Zwift racing manager.
"For the first time, I wasn’t just surviving - I was thriving on the bike."
Most importantly, Matt beat prostate cancer, proving to himself and others that triumph is possible, no matter what life throws at you.
What’s Next
Today, Matt is cancer-free and in the best shape of his life. He continues to train with Njinga, maintain his fitness, and pursue new sportive goals. Inspired by his journey, he is now even considering becoming a coach himself - to give back to the cycling community that supported him.
"The results, goals, and friendships I’ve gained are all thanks to Njinga. I couldn’t have done it without them."
