JERRY COLLIER

What started as joining Njinga to improve fitness turned into finding a community, life long friends and conquering several multi day events.

ACHIEVEMENT HIGHLIGHTS

FTP IMPROVEMENT

31 Watt increase from January 2016 - October 2016.

NJINGA COL CLIMBER TEST

Recorded an average power of 340w and a power to weight score of 3.5w/kg over the 5.5km climb on a wattbike.

LEJOG CHALLENGE RIDE

Completed the 1000 miles in 10 days easier and faster in 2018 after training with Njinga, compared to when he first completed LEJOG in 2016.

GIRO SARDEGNA

Completed the six-day stage race at Giro Sardegna in April 2018.

The encouragement and fun I've encountered at Njinga has become very important to me. In fact, it's as important as the training which has allowed me to easily transition from riding indoors to outdoors, from weekend rides to adventures like the Giro de Sardegna.

Before Njinga

Throughout my life, I've always been fairly fit, but in November 2015, as I was heading into my fifties and struggling with being overnight, I decided to take on a challenge: riding from Los Angeles to Miami. Although this was the experience of a lifetime, I was seriously unprepared for the thirteen days of long-distance riding.

Upon my return to the UK, a friend recommended Njinga to me and I decided to book and try out a indoor training session. I have never looked back.

I took my first FTP test in January 2016 and produced a score of 256W. One month later, I produced 271W. On a recent Col Climber test, I averaged 340W, showing that Njinga delivers results.

The impact of the Njinga Collective

The
Njinga Collective – Njinga's not-for-profit outdoor riding club – is, first and foremost, a community of wonderful people who just happen to love cycling. They have huge expertise and a genuine passion for what they do.

The diversity of the community, from novice to age-group World Championship riders, is quite incredible.

Regardless of ability, everyone works as a team both in Njinga classes and on Collective rides.

The support, encouragement, and camaraderie of the Njinga community

The encouragement and fun I've encountered at Njinga has become very important to me. In fact, it's as important as the training which has allowed me to easily transition from riding indoors to outdoors, from weekend rides to adventures like the Giro de Sardegna.

It's these qualities that stand Njinga apart from conventional cycle labs.

Improving my LEJOG results with help from Njinga (in training and community)

Since joining Njinga, I've ridden LEJOG twice: once in 2016 and again in 2018. The route we took on both occasions had some challenging climbs, but with my training, I was able to conquer them – adequately on the first occasion and improving on the second.

On my second occasion, four Njinga riders surprised me by taking two days off work and taking the wind for me on day five.

Njinga's unique philosophy improved my technique

Njinga has improved my technique with their unique philosophy of Train Smart, Fuel Smart, Think Smart = Ride Smart.

Enhancing my performance and confidence has translated into my enjoyment of bike journeys and multi-day cycling.

The Njinga Collective has similarly given me real confidence in group cycling and, with them, I've enjoyed exploring other parts of the world.

FTP improvements: 86W!

I took my first FTP test in January 2016 and produced a score of 256W. One month later, I produced 271W.

On a recent Col Climber test, I averaged 340W, showing that Njinga delivers results.

Njinga World Champion

In 2016, I took part in Njinga 3 day indoor World Championship competition. From team time trials to 7 minute challenges it was good fun and at the end...
I was crowned Njinga World Champion.

What's next?

My wife and I cycled through Thailand earlier this year. Though I sense North America will draw me back again, I'd love to cycle Alaska or Utah next!
