If this is your first bike we know it can be hard to get your head around all the different components and simply knowing where to start with the cycling jargon everyone seems to be using online or in shops. This module will help you get more familiar with your new bike and when you do need to go into a bike shop, you know a thing or two already.
This module is all about making your feel comfortable around your new bike. We will cover everything from choosing your bike, how to get yourself fitted onto your new bike, a safety check you should complete before you go out and also look at specific pedals, saddles and tyres in more detail. This section is great to get you set up on your bike and ready to start learning the key skills.
This section will dive into essential tools we recommend you have at home to maintain your bike, to clean your bike and to take out on a ride with you in case of emergencies. We will also introduce you to the key cycling kit we recommend for the different seasons.
Learning the basics is key to help you be safe out on the road and to ensure you get the best from your ride. This section will cover all the basic cycling skills from setting off, braking, gear selection, climbing, descending and much more. You will also receive coaching tips and drills to help you put each new skill into practice.
This section will cover basic bike mechanics. We're not expecting you to be able to give your bike a full service or replace complicated components. Instead its learning the basics on how to be able to care for your bike and ensure it is in good working order. Knowing these basics will extend the life of your bike and to ensure you are safe when out on the road. This section will take a look at bike care including cleaning and will also cover that dreaded bike puncture and how you can repair it.
This section will help ensure you are well prepared for your ride, have everything you need from snacks, routes, tools and more to being fully aware of the rules of the road to recovering well at the end.
By the end of this section you will be ready to go out and enjoy your ride.

MICHELLE SHARLAND
Michelle is a keen cyclist who grew up not very sporty at school but always loving sport. She came to the world of cycling when she moved to the UK from South Africa (nearly 20 years ago) as she needed to have an outdoor activity and has always owned a bike. She started off mountain biking every weekend, did some events and made some amazing friends (including meeting her husband!)
Michelle is a qualified occupational therapist and specialised in working with children with disabilities. More recently, children with autism. She has a real interest in physical activity and the relationship it has with our mental and physical health and well being, to include that ‘purposeful activity’ occupational therapists, emphasise on a daily basis.
Michelle decided that becoming a Level 2 cycle coach and indoor cycling instructor would give her the confidence to work with her client group as well as others to develop their cycling skills and in some cases, ignite a new hobby or even passion. Michelle’s special interest has been in the new rider as well as women’s cycling. She started a women’s cycling group a few years ago as there was nothing available for women new to cycling. The idea was to provide a safe and supportive group and environment for women to ride and learn about cycling on the roads and off roads.
Michelle has also raced and have done several major sportives, multi day events and for several years she has ride captained all levels of riders both domestically and internationally.
